Murder trial starts for 2022 stabbing death outside Rumors bar in Medford

MEDFORD, Ore. — A Jackson County murder case is starting its trial phase.

23-year-old Hannah Marie Martin has a murder charge for the deadly stabbing of 31-year-old Brittany Lovrovich.

Lovrovich died on a parking lot next to Rumors Lounge in March 2022.

Police believe Martin stabbed Lovrovich during a drug robbery.  They say Martin and her boyfriend Zackary Helwagen met with Lovrovich to buy fentanyl from her before stabbing her between Rumors and the OK Market.

Martin’s initial indictment charged her with second-degree murder and first-degree robbery in March 2022.  An amended indictment last fall added another second-degree murder charge, tied to robbery.

The charge also accuses Helwagen of involvement to, “intentionally cause the death of Brittany Laine Lovrovich.”

Martin’s amended indictment’s other murder charge says they, “did unlawfully and intentionally commit or attempt to commit the crime of Robbery in the First Degree and in the course of and in the furtherance of or in immediate flight from the crime that defendants were committing or attempting to commit, Hannah Martin caused the death of Britttany Laine Lovrovich, another human being who was not a participant in the crime.”

Jury selection started the trial this morning, with opening statements and testimony to follow, scheduled through Friday.

Helwagen’s trial for second-degree murder and first-degree robbery is set for two weeks in September.
