Jamaican-American Mayor of Miramar Wayne Messam has been appointed as the 2nd Vice President of the African American Mayors Association (AAMA), a professional organization that represents and supports African American mayors across the United States.
In addition to this prestigious appointment, Mayor Messam and Miramar’s Economic Development & Housing Department have been awarded the AAMA’s Maynard Jackson Award for Economic Development Initiative, recognizing the impactful KOFE Financial Literacy Series, that was presented by Mayo Messam.
The KOFE (Knowledge of Financial Education) program, developed in collaboration with Consolidated Credit in 2015, has been instrumental in boosting financial literacy among Miramar residents and city employees. The initiative offers a wide range of resources including interactive courses, budgeting tools, workshops, and personalized financial coaching. These efforts aim to empower participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to achieve financial stability and make informed financial decisions.
Mayor Wayne Messam expressed his gratitude for the recognition, stating, “It is an honor to serve as the 2nd Vice President of the African American Mayors Association and to receive the Maynard Jackson Award. Our partnership with Consolidated Credit through the KOFE program has significantly improved the financial health of our community. A deserving honor
Messam, a Florida native born to Jamaican immigrants, has carved a notable career in both the political realm. His entry into politics began with his service on the Miramar City Commission, where he was first elected in 2011.
His leadership and vision for the city’s growth and development were quickly recognized, leading to his election as Mayor of Miramar in 2015. He has since been re-elected, continuing to serve the community with a focus on economic development, sustainability, and improving the quality of life for residents.
He also ran for president of the United States in 2020.
