The actress and singer has another great talent–sewing!
Tatyana Ali is going beyond the screen to champion Black maternal health with the launch of Baby Yams, a limited-edition series of baby quilts. Inspired by her own experiences, Ali is turning her passion for sewing into a way to uplift Black mothers and advocate for better birthing experiences.
“This #BlackMaternalHealthWeek, I’m launching Baby Yams, a limited series of baby quilts that I can’t wait for you to see!” Ali announced on Instagram, inviting fans to join the #BabyYamsFam for launch updates.
The Baby Yams website digs deeper into Ali’s personal connection to the cause. After a difficult first delivery, Ali discovered the power of the reproductive justice movement and the support of a Black midwife during her second pregnancy. Now, she’s using Baby Yams to empower other Black mothers.
“100% of proceeds from each quilt will go to Black and Indigenous midwives and doulas uniquely positioned to give us the care we need,” the website reports.
The first offering from Baby Yams is a collection of heirloom-quality quilts handcrafted from vibrant Ankara fabrics. Designed by Ali herself, the “Abundance” collection features unique, limited-edition pieces.
This heartfelt initiative goes beyond beautiful quilts. Ali’s dedication to improving Black maternal health outcomes and ensuring all mothers have access to the care they deserve is the driving force for the new venture. With Baby Yams, Ali is sewing hope for a brighter future for Black families.
