EVANSVILLE — The annual Indiana Black Barbershop Health Initiative is this Saturday in Evansville.
The event will take place from 9 a.m. 3 p.m. at seven participating locations.
A statewide effort, the event offers free health screenings and education on chronic diseases.
“Black barbershops serve as a therapy center and place of healing for Black men that show up every few weeks. The foundation of a relationship between Black men and their barber is built on trust,” said Jeremi Taylor, chairperson of the Evansville Commission on the Social Status of African American Male. “If barbers trust medical professionals to conduct screenings in their shops, Black men are more likely to trust them and seek annual preventative medical advice and care.”
According to a release from the Evansville Human Relations Commission, figures from the Indiana Department of Health show Black men have the highest mortality rate of any group in Indiana. Prostate cancer is also more prevalent for Black men in Indiana than any other racial or ethnic group.
