ALBANY (TND) — A member of New York’s exploratory reparations commission has called for abolishing the current criminal justice system while attributing climate change to White people, according to past social media posts.
Ron Daniels, one of nine “distinguished individuals” to serve on the New York State Community Commission on Reparations Remedies, has supported dissolving what he referred to as the “criminal injustice system” due to past trauma inflicted on Black people.
“From the slave patrols, to convict leasing and terrorizing of the Black communities by the War on Drugs, we are due reparations!” Daniels, whose comments were first reported by the New York Post, argued in February 2023. “The criminal injustice system must be abolished and restitution and compensation made to repair the cross-generational damages inflicted on its victims, Black people.”
Daniels’s commission colleague, Lurie Daniel Favors, echoed his sentiment when defending campaigns to defund police departments.
Police all across the country are literally proving *daily* why #DefundThePolice is necessary,” Favors wrote in April 2021. “I’m old enough to remember summayall claiming activists were going too far.”
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul signed the law creating the commission last year and appointed three of the nine commissioners to examine inequalities impacting the Black community. The other six were appointed by legislative leaders. Daniels and Favors were both appointed by New York State Assembly Speaker Carl E. Heastie, D-Bronx.
Last year, Daniels criticized Independence Day as a trivial holiday due to what he perceived were existing injustices for underprivileged groups.
“It is mere shallow patriotism, which is meaningless,” he posted on X last year. “In the spirit of Frederick Douglass, it is a day that should remind the oppressed that ‘if there is no struggle, there is no progress.’ Therefore, on this Frederick Douglass Day, our task is clear. #TheStruggleContinues.”

Daniels also attributed climate change to White people.
I Say White Folks Messed Up the Weather as a Way of Saying = Disrespect for Earth Mother by Materialistic, Greed- and Profit-Driven Capitalist Systems of Europe and America = Killing the Planet and Danger to Humanity and All Forms of Life,” he posted in October 2021.
The commission’s findings will inform policy proposals concerning economic opportunity, healthcare and education disparities Black residents experience, according to State Sen. James Sanders, Jr., D-Queens. Favors expressed discontent with previous approaches pursued by White people.
“F–K YOU & YOUR RACE APOLOGETICS. WE WILL NOT BE SILENT. WE WILL NOT MAKE YOU COMFORTABLE,” she said in July 2019. “We have given everything … to make you comfortable about how evilly twisted your white supremacist sickness is, and WE ARE DONE with that as a political/education/housing policy.”
Daniels did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The National Desk Monday.
