Most people eat white and brown rice but may not be as familiar with black rice.

Though this whole grain looks black in the bag, it turns a dark shade of purple once it’s cooked (which gives it the other, more accurate nickname of “purple rice”).

Registered dietitian Natalie Allen shares more about black rice and its benefits with Good Housekeeping. She’s also clinical assistant professor of nutrition and dietetics at Missouri State University.
