St. Louis reparations committee to get more time to draft recommendations

ST. LOUIS — The citizen commission charged with designing a plan for the city to make reparations for slavery and anti-Black discrimination is getting six more months to get the job done.

Mayor Tishaura O. Jones, who created the commission via executive order, recently agreed to extend the deadline for the commission’s report to September from March.

Commissioners requested the extension in late November following criticism from activists who felt the commission had not done enough to get the public involved in its work.

The commission also asked the mayor’s office for money to better advertise their meetings. Vernon Mitchell, the mayor’s liaison to the commission, said there was no money budgeted for that.

But Dr. Will Ross, the commission’s vice chair, recommended his colleagues draw up a formal budget proposal and ask again.
