North Carolina is known for its rich history, beautiful scenery and delicious food. But did you know that some of the world’s most iconic products also originated in the Tar Heel State? Here are seven famous products and food places that you may not know were born in North Carolina:
Pepsi-Cola
In New Bern, a local pharmacist named Caleb Bradham concocted a unique beverage that would soon become one of the world’s most beloved soft drinks – Pepsi-Cola. Initially called “Brad’s Drink,” this refreshing concoction was carefully crafted using a blend of sugar, water, caramel, lemon oil, kola nuts, nutmeg and a few secret ingredients. On August 28, 1898, Bradham decided to give his drink a more catchy name, settling on “Pepsi-Cola.” Inspired by the word “dyspepsia,” meaning indigestion, Bradham believed that his creation was not just a thirst quencher but a “healthy” cola that could aid digestion. With the growing popularity and demand for his Pepsi-Cola syrup, Bradham established the Pepsi-Cola Company in late 1902, becoming its first president. As the business flourished, “Pepsi-Cola” was officially trademarked on June 16, 1903, marking the beginning of a global cola empire.

In 1929, Sam Garner, the proprietor of a barbecue stand called the Dixie Pig, concocted a recipe for his signature hot sauce.
