“Squad” member Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) claimed Tuesday evening that President Joe Biden is losing support from black voters due to the president not “having a conversation about reparations.”
Bowman’s comment comes after recent polling data from NBC News indicates that the president’s support from black voters is faltering, with Biden’s net approval rating going from over 46% throughout the year to 27% in November. The New York congressman argued that the decreased support is due to the Biden administration focusing on sending money to other countries to fight wars overseas instead of spending that money on education or healthcare.

“So I think it’s a combination of all these things that’s turning young people off, and people of color have been turned off for a while because of lack of comprehensive immigration reform if you’re talking about the Latino community and no conversation at all about reparations if you talk about the black community,” Bowman said on MSNBC’s Alex Wagner Tonight. “But we’re spending hundreds of billions of dollars every year on weapons and war, but we can’t even have a conversation about reparations? Those are the things that are happening right now.”
Bowman’s comment about the Biden administration on wars comes as the United States aims to help Israel after the terrorist group Hamas attacked the country on Oct. 7. The administration is also focused on how it can continue to financially support Ukraine, which is still fighting its war against Russia that started in February of last year.

Beyond losing support from black voters, recent polls also indicate that Biden is losing support from younger voters, with one issue this demographic has against the Biden administration being the economy. A recent poll showed that 59% of voters under the age of 30 would rate the current state of the economy as “poor.”
Former President Donald Trump is expected to be the Republican Party’s 2024 nominee for president, setting the stage for a rematch between him and Biden. In a hypothetical rematch between the two, Trump would win more support from voters between the ages of 18 and 34, polling at 46% with voters in that age group, against Biden’s 42%, according to a new poll.
