National Forum for Black Public Administrators Advocate for more African American Leadership in Government

Recently on The Rashad Richey Morning Show, the National Forum for Black Public Administrators (NFBPA) was highlighted as a crucial organization working to advance African American leadership in government at all levels. The NFBPA, established in 1983, has over 2500 members nationwide and covers more than 350 jurisdictions.

During the interview, President of NFBPA, Darnell Brown, The Executive Director, Marcia Connor, and the Co-Chair of the Emerging Leaders Council, Shenequa D Crockett, discussed the importance of the organization and its programs.

Ms. Crockett also discussed the upcoming documentary titled ‘Beyond the Numbers: The Catalyst for Change.’ The film, developed by the Emerging Leaders Council, will highlight young executives under 40 who are making significant impacts on public administration and policy changes. Ms. Crockett emphasized the importance of having a voice in the room to ensure the securing of equity, the pushing through of policies in government and municipalities, and the maintenance and fight for justice and equality in areas where they are lacking. Ms. Crockett stated, ‘For us to have a voice in a room, for us to ensure that equity is secured, that policies are being pushed through in these governments and municipalities and that justice that we maintain and fight for equality where there isn’t any.’ The documentary aims to give visibility to these leaders who are often overlooked due to their age.”

Emerging leaders’ representative for the Seattle chapter of NFBPA, Dr. Julius Moss, shared his experience with the organization. Dr. Moss highlighted the significance of programs like the Executive Leadership program and Mentorship program. Dr. Moss emphasized the importance of getting more black leadership in government, as many African Americans depend on government jobs for employment. “It just seems like again the natural progression of just being able to create those systems and support those that work and those efforts to get more honestly black leadership in government,” said Dr. Julius Moss.

President of NFBPA, Darnell Brown, highlighted the organization’s four-decade history of mentoring and inspiring public servants across the country. Mr. Brown emphasized the need to transform the way government operates, especially in light of recent societal changes brought about by events like the George Floyd incident and the COVID-19 pandemic. Mr. Brown stressed the importance of providing excellent service, resources, and guidance to underserved communities.

As the interview continued, executive Director Marcia Connor elaborated on the diverse range of programs and initiatives provided by NFBPA. Additionally, she highlighted the organization’s preparations for their highly anticipated national conference, which is scheduled to take place in Baltimore, MD from April 3rd to 7th, 2024.
