Lafayette, La (KADN) For the first time since winning outright in the primary election Louisiana Governor elect Jeff Landry held a press conference in Lafayette. Landry discussed his transition plans and what’s on his top priority.
“One team, one dream, one Louisiana,” said Landry.
Wednesday was the first sight of Governor Elect Jeff Landry’s transition press conference. Normally, each Governor begins their transition process in Baton Rouge, but Landry plans to do everything as Governor different the previous administrations.
“This administration will ensure that every part of the state has a voice, not just those who occupy the capitol. This administration is going to represent the people of Louisiana, not just the political class. So we’re going to run this transition out of Lafayette, which we believe gives everyone access to us. Makes it easy for everyone around the state to reach us,” said Landry.
Also in the press conference, Landry says his top priority starting in January will be crime.
“Within the first week if we can. We are going to work with the legislature leadership and get them into session and we’re going to have a crime session to fix the structure problem with our criminal Justice system,” Landry said.
In the past several years Louisiana ranks at one of the highest states for incarceration and violent crimes.
Landry believes having transparency and accountability in the state’s justice system will reach citizens of Louisiana, and keep people from committing crimes.
“Our criminal Justice system is how we keep people from going to jail, not how we let people out. We also want to make sure that victims have rights and ensure that we concentrate on the victims rather than rights of the criminals,” Landry stated.
