Parkland Health Names Street for Dr. John Wesley Anderson and Take Command Secures $25M in Funding

Parkland Health is renaming a street near the hospital after Dr. John Wesley Anderson. Anderson helped found the Lone Star Medical, Dental, and Pharmaceutical Association, one of the first African-American Medical professional organizations in the United States. He earned his DDS by 1888, becoming the third black doctor to practice medicine in Dallas. In addition, Anderson also bought land outside the city limits to fund a housing project named Lincoln Manor. Anderson treated more than 70,000 patients during his career.


Take Command, a Dallas-based SaaS for small business health insurance, has raised $25M led by growth equity investor Edison Partners and current investors LiveOak Venture Partners and SJF Ventures. Take Command is the first and largest company to offer ICHRA administration in the country as an alternative to traditional group health insurance. In addition to being compliant with the Affordable Care Act, ICHRAs save employers an average of 10-20 percent in costs. CEO Jack Hooper, who founded Take Command after his experience navigating the confusing world of healthcare insurance, is dedicated to helping other business owners through this new benefits model. 


The University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth announced the founding dean of its College of Nursing. Cindy Weston has received three distinguished nursing honors for her many contributions to the profession. Weston received the American Academy of Nursing Fellow for her impact on healthcare, the Texas Nurse Practitioners 2023 Nurse Practitioner of the Year award for demonstrating excellence and serving as a role model, and the University of Texas Medical Branch School of Nursing Alumni Association 2023 Hall of Fame Award for contributing as a UTMB alumnus to excellence in patient care, research, published work, education, community service, and leadership. 


Professor of Molecular Biology at UT Southwestern Zhijian “James” Chen has been presented with the 2023 Louisa Gross Horwitz Prize for his innovative work on innate immunity. Dr. Chen is one of the world’s top researchers on innate immunity. One of his many discoveries is MAVS, the first mitochondrial protein involved in immunity against infections. As the prize recipient, Chen will receive an honorarium and presentation as part of a lecture series at Columbia University in New York.
