Statement of support for Dean Amaney Jamal from SPIA students and alumni

On Wednesday, Oct. 18, a truck with provocative images posted on it was seen on Nassau Street in Princeton falsely accusing the Dean of Princeton University’s School of Public and International Affairs (SPIA) of “coddling antisemitism” and failing to condemn the atrocities perpetrated by Hamas in Israel.

These billboards are a demonstration of the harassment and vitriol Dean Amaney Jamal is exposed to as both Dean of a prestigious institution and a Palestinian-American and Muslim.

As current and former students from SPIA, we will not entertain the baseless and Islamophobic accusations leveled against Dean Jamal which deliberately ignore her clear, expressed stance on this issue. Dean Jamal has our full support as a professor and administrator, and her humanity is not up for debate.

Princeton University has been a place of community for many of us. In SPIA, we have learned to hone our skills and challenge ourselves as scholars and policy makers, and face difficult issues head on. But that is only possible when all of us feel safe and respected in our humanity. Our work as policy makers requires us to tackle deeply human, personal issues in our communities, countries, and world. Instead of dehumanizing each other and ramping up divisiveness, empathy must be at the core of our service to everyone. As Dean Jamal noted in her statement on Oct. 12, 2023, “empathy and care are not zero-sum.” Dean Jamal has shown us the way through her scholarship and commitment to working for peace, hand-in-hand with scholars and faith leaders from all backgrounds and nationalities.

SPIA, and Princeton University, must remain a safe and brave space for students, staff, and faculty to exist and grow.

We call on members of the Princeton University community to:

Protect academic and public spaces for sensitive discussions on public policy issues, including conflict and international affairs.

Openly condemn the targeting and harassment of Princeton students, faculty, and staff and operationalize processes in place to investigate such targeting and harassment.

Provide social-emotional support to all students and members of the Princeton community affected by the current tragedy and violence.

We believe in Dean Amaney Jamal’s resolve, capacity, and generosity in guiding our community in this time of turmoil and we stand wholeheartedly with her. We hope you will join us in doing so.
