TYRONE, Ga. — With a population of fewer than 8,000 people, Tyrone, Georgia is known as a quiet suburban town but it’s about to make history with its current municipal election.
While the quiet country life has evolved since the town was established in 1911, Tyrone has never had a Black elected official.
But all that is changing with Dia Hunter. He’s running unopposed for the Post 2 council seat.
“I was a little sad you know because I was like for a town that’s this accepting how come it took so long and why do I have to be first,” said Hunter jokingly.
For the past five years, Hunter has been on the planning commission, helping to shape development in the town and he plans to continue that work when sworn in as a councilmember.
“I would like to see some economic development by the way of small businesses but the right type of small businesses, you know small businesses who support small town living,” added Hunter.
And for residents and even the town’s current mayor Eric Dial, the milestone of electing the first African American to the council is being celebrated.
“It’s a blessing because we do know how highly qualified he is,” Dial said. “Nobody has a bad word to say about Dia Hunter, if they do they don’t know him. I’m thrilled for Dia and I’m thrilled for the town of Tyrone.”
Tyrone residents are also voting for the Post 1 council seat as well as the race for mayor. Early voting ends on Oct. 20 and Election Day is Nov. 7.
