Wells Law senior attorney R. Michael Wells Sr. was recognized by North Carolina Lawyers Weekly as an influential Icon attorney in North Carolina for 2023-024. He was one of 16 lawyers in the state recognized for his leadership. He served as president of the North Carolina Bar Association to establish a program to provide confidential assistance to help attorneys with cognitive difficulties to retire with dignity. This program received national recognition by the American Bar Association.

Mountain Valley is celebrating 40 years of service to the community with a special fundraising gala at 6 p.m. Oct. 21 at Cross Creek Country Club in Mount Airy. The evening will include a live auction, entertainment featuring Martha Bassett and band, guest speakers, a bourbon auction and a meal.

Dr. Shane A. Cobb, a second-generation chiropractic physician, leads the clinic, focusing on spinal trauma and the management of whiplash and related disorders.

Salem Academy and College will host its third Health Leadership Forum from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Oct. 20 in Hanes Auditorium at Salem’s Elberson Fine Arts Center, 412 Rams Drive in Winston-Salem. The forum will feature women in health leadership roles from across the nation and will discuss trends in health and health leadership and offer attendees opportunities for networking while hearing from some of the nation’s most widely recognized experts and innovators in their fields.

Forsyth County Nurse-Family Partnership Supervisor Christine Wanous received the National Tenacious Caregiver Award for Nurse Supervisor from the National Service Office for Nurse-Family Partnership during its annual education summit last month.

NFP is an evidence-based program where nurses regularly visit low-income first-time moms and their families at home starting early in pregnancy until the baby’s second birthday with the goal of improving pregnancy outcomes, child health and development, and economic self-sufficiency for the family.

The Tenacious Caregiver Award for Nurse Supervisor recognizes an outstanding team leader who goes above and beyond to support their team’s wellbeing, professional development and impact.

Wanous has been supervisor of Forsyth County Department of Public Health’s NFP program in since it began more than 10 years ago.

Wanous received eight nominations from her team. Wanous says providing reflective supervision and leadership to such a caring and committed team is a highlight of her career.

The North Carolina Land and Water Fund Board of Trustees met Sept. 19-20 to consider grant applications and make awards for projects that will protect North Carolina’s land and water from the mountains to the coast. With the newly enacted state budget, more than $45 million will be available immediately to fund these projects.

On the Move

• Alton B. Pollard III will join the faculty of Wake Forest University as the James and Marilyn Dunn Chairman in Baptist Studies in the School of Divinity and university professor of African American Studies in the college of arts and sciences beginning July 1, 2024. Pollard previously served on the faculty of WFU from 1988-1998 and was Luce Visiting Professor in the School of Divinity in 2009. The Dunn Chair honors the important work of James and Marilyn Dunn, who were influential Baptist leaders and committed to the work of the School of Divinity.
• Fidelity Bank has announced that Fred Turner has joined Trust Company of North Carolina as senior vice president and wealth management development officer. His office is located at 802 Green Valley Road in Greensboro.
• Eric Kerchner has been named the City of Burlington’s Paramount Theater and Event Center Director. Kerchner has been working in arts administration for more than 25 years. A graduate of Wake Forest University undergraduate and City University of London graduate programs in arts administration, his background is in theater.
