WXII 12 JOSHUA DAVIS SAT DOWN WITH THE CITY COUNCIL MEMBER TO TALK ABOUT WHAT’S IN THAT REPORT AND HOW IT AFFECTS THE COMMUNITY. A COMMON IDEA WHEN WE TALK ABOUT REPARATIONS IS REPAYING BLACK COMMUNITIES THROUGH MONEY. BUT A COUNCILMAN I SPOKE TO SAYS THEIR FOCUS ISN’T JUST ON CUTTING A CHECK. IT’S ABOUT COMPREHEND OF POLICY CHANGES AND THE IMPACTS THEY’LL HAVE IN THE LONG TERM. THE ONE HIGH POINT COMMISSION IS COMPRISED OF MEMBERS OF THE LOCAL NAACP. CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS AND OTHER LOCAL LEADERS WITH THE FOCUS OF ADDRESSING HISTORIC INEQUITIES THAT COMMUNITIES OF COLOR FACE. COUNCILMAN MICHAEL HOLMES REPRESENTS THE CITY OF HIGH POINT SIXTH WARD AND IS A MEMBER OF THE COMMISSION. WE LOOK AT SOME OF THE HISTORIC INEQUITIES AND THAT BLACK HIGH POINT HAS TO FACE WHEN IT COMES TO FOOD INSECURITY, WHEN IT COMES TO MEDIAN INCOME, WHEN IT COMES TO ECONOMIC ADVANCEMENT, WHEN IT COMES TO EDUCATIONAL ATTAINMENT, AT HIGH POINT HAS SUFFERED SOME OF THE WORST OUTCOMES IN OUR NATION. AT THE HIGH POINT, CITY COUNCIL HAS ADOPTED A REPORT FROM THE COMMISSION BREAKING DOWN THESE ISSUES AND HOW THEY AFFECT DIFFERENT AREAS OF HIGH POINT FOR HIGH POINT REPARATION TAKES. THE FORM OF CITY POLICY BEING MADE TO SPECIFICALLY TARGET THESE INEQUITIES. THIS WAS NEVER ABOUT TRANSFERS OF MONEY, BECAUSE WE KNOW IN THE LONG TERM, UM, YOU KNOW, A SHORT INFUSION OF MONEY IS NOT GOING TO MOVE PEOPLE OUT OF POVERTY IN A GREAT DEAL. IT’S CHANGING THE ENVIRONMENT, ECONOMIC ENVIRONMENT FOR PEOPLE THAT THAT THEY EXIST IN AND GETTING AND GETTING THOSE LONG TERM OPPORTUNITIES BACK HOMES ADDS THAT WHILE OTHER CITIES ARE FOCUSING ON SOME POLICY WHEN IT COMES TO ADDRESSING REPARATIONS, IT’S NOT TO THE SAME EXTENT AS HIGH POINT, BUT TO HAVE AN ENTIRE ROADMAP TO ADDRESS THIS HISTORIC POVERTY IS SOMETHING THAT I THINK ONCE, ONCE WRITTEN LARGE, THE COUNTRY GETS THE GETS A HOLD OF. WE’RE REALLY GOING TO SEE A LOT OF FOLKS EMULATING WHAT WE DID HERE IN HIGH POINT. YOU KNOW, HOLMES SAYS THE NEXT STEPS WILL INCLUDE GOING OVER THE DIFFERENT COMPONENTS OF THIS REPORT AND HOW THE CITY COULD ALLOCATE RESOURCES.
