Former Detroit Mayor Dave Bing announced on Monday that he’s endorsing U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-Lansing) for her 2024 U.S. Senate candidacy.
“The city of Detroit and the state of Michigan need a U.S. senator with integrity, honesty, and a real record of getting things done,” said Bing. “I have faith in Elissa Slotkin to be that leader because I’ve seen what she has been able to accomplish – and I know she will go to bat for Detroit in the Senate. Elissa’s record in Congress reflects her commitment to listening to her constituents, and turning those words into action. I am thrilled to endorse Elissa for this seat, and I know she will deliver for Detroit and for Michigan in the U.S. Senate.”
Bing, who is African American, was a prominent community and business leader before entering politics. He served as Detroit’s mayor from 2009 to 2014. He is also a former point guard for the Detroit Pistons and NBA Hall of Famer.
U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Lansing) has announced that she is retiring next year, opening the door to crowded primaries to replace her. Other Democratic candidates for the seat include Michigan Board of Education President Pamela Pugh, former state Rep. Leslie Love (D-Detroit), actor Hill Harper, businessman Nasser Beydoun and attorney Zack Burns.
On the Republican side several have declared for the seat. Nikki Snyder, a member of the State Board of Education; attorney Alexandria Taylor, who has represented Michigan GOP Chair Kristina Karamo; former Berrien County Commissioner Ezra Scott; and Michael Hoover, who used to work for Dow Chemical Co.
This is the second new endorsement for Slotkin in as many weeks after state Sen. Mallory McMorrow (D-Royal Oak) announced her support on Aug. 7. During a press event in Detroit in July, former U.S. Rep. Gabby Giffords (D-Ariz.) announced that she is endorsing Slotkin. Former Michigan Gov. Jim Blanchard and U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens (D-Birmingham) have also backed Slotkin.
