Commissioned by Spora Health, New York-based design studio Leadoff Studio has created the Momma’s Kit packaging, after thorough ethnographic research around two medical devices: a Blood Pressure Cuff and Pulse Oximeter.
Leadoff Studio worked closely with Black patients, doulas, doctors, and physician assistants to create an empathetic and intuitive design.
The Momma’s Kit monitors vital signs on a daily basis via a blood pressure cuff and pulse oximeter.
Spora Health maintains that “as much as 80 percent” of the common conditions contributing to maternal mortality in Black individuals can be detected.
The Momma’s Kit is sent to Spora members towards the end of their second trimester and onboards them to the health monitoring program that runs throughout the third and fourth trimesters (3 months before birth, and 3 months after birth).
By flagging low oxygen levels or irregular blood pressure, Spora’s physicians are able to identify over 80% of conditions most common to Black pregnant women and new mothers.
Black women have a maternal mortality rate of 37.3 deaths per 100,000 live births compared to 14.9 for white women and 11.8 for Hispanic women.
Leadoff Studio’s vision for the kit was one where the graphic design and packaging would create positive feelings and a memorable unboxing experience.
At the same time, they needed the kit to be intuitive and easy to use.
The cuff and oximeter can be returned to Spora for refurbishing and reuse while all the other parts – including a phone stand for telehealth appointments – are paper-based and recyclable.
