Collective reparations fund now active in Frankly County
After years of reflection, learning and commitment to racial justice, the Reparations Collective, a group of Franklin County residents who benefit from white privilege, announces the public opening of a Collective Reparations Fund.
According to the Rev. Kate Stevens, a member of the group, said that while people, on average, have more resources than Black people and that it’s time for individuals to recognize this injustice by personally paying into reparations. Contributors can make deposits of any amount.
“We recognize that reparations are not just about money,” Stevens said. “Our long-term aim is to secure all manner of reparations for African Americans. In the meantime, we will use collected funds to support Black-led non-profit organizations in our area.”
The fund, which is held at Greenfield Savings Bank, is funded primarily by crowd-sourcing. The Reparations Collective has already distributed $7,000 to local, Black-led, nonprofit organizations. The group will raise funds to be allocated every six months as reparations payments to Black-led nonprofit groups in our region.
