Saturday, protesters took to the streets of La Crosse near the former K-Mart building as part of the Hands Off! National Day of Action.
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) – Saturday, protesters took to the streets of La Crosse near the former K-Mart building as part of the Hands Off! National Day of Action.
The day is what organizers called a nationwide mobilization to stop President Donald Trump and Elon Musk from what they said is “the most brazen power grab in modern history.”
“What is it going to take to get you to fight for what is right,” Tasha Lewis, a Co-Organizer of the La Crosse Hands Off! Protest said. “Because it’s not about left and right. It’s about what is right and wrong right now. And this is wrong.”
Organizers said over 700 people were projected to protest how they feel about the President’s actions.
“It makes me very uncomfortable that we have a President with all these crises going on and he’s out golfing and not doing his job for the American people, but for the few of the billionaires in our country, Protester Karen Kuhlmann said.
While many were from the immediate La Crosse area, some came from as far away as Prairie du Chien. For Linda Sondreal, she was protesting because she is concerned for her special needs grandchild.
“The education fund for our grand kids that we set up has tanked over 50% in these two days,” she said. “A man that goes golfing when the rest of us are in pain. I don’t have any respect for him.”
Those who were opposed to the message of people who lined the streets had a message of their own. “Guitar Bob,” a Trump supporter was telling protesters about the national debt.
“Trump can’t dig us out of this hole in a month,” he said. “How are we going to blame Trump for the hole we’re in that has been years and years digging us in this hole and they’re blaming Trump. He’s only been in office a month. We need to trim the fat off government. That’s what he’s doing. Short term pain long term gain.”
According to the Hands Off! website, preliminary details suggest another day of action will take place on May 1, 2025 across the United States.
