31-year-old guilty but mentally ill for shooting Alma police station

Tyler Moreno faces up to life in prison for a crime spree in Alma in October 2021.

ALMA, Mich. (WJRT) – A Gratiot County jury found a 31-year-old man guilty but mentally ill for shooting at the Alma Police Department station in October 2021.

Tyler Moreno drove to the police station on Oct. 18, 2021, and fired numerous gunshots at the building, officers and several patrol vehicles parked outside. Officers fired back at Moreno and hit him at least once before he fled the scene.

Police chased Moreno west toward the Alma College campus, where he stopped in front of the chapel. He continued firing gunshots during the pursuit through the city.

The Gratiot County Prosecutor’s Office says Moreno tried to claim legal insanity during the trial this week. However, the jury rejected his insanity claim and instead found him guilty but mentally ill of the following charges:

  • Attempted murder.
  • Assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder.
  • Discharging a firearm from a vehicle.
  • Discharging a firearm at a building.
  • Six weapons charges.

“Today we are grateful to the jurors who committed their time and attention on this seven-day trial,” said Gratiot County Prosecutor Laura Bever said.

Moreno will be sentenced on Sept. 16 in Gratiot County Circuit Court. He faces up to life in prison.
